PPE & Product Information
S.HENRY garments are personal protective equipment (PPE). This page explains how to choose, wear and look after them, and what our product information does and does not mean. It forms part of our Terms of Sale. Always read the user information supplied with each garment.
Certification status
- Every fabric in the S.HENRY range is certified at fabric level.
- Each finished garment goes through its own garment certification. Until that is complete, the garment is shown as “Available upon certification” and cannot be ordered.
- No garment is supplied before its certificate has been issued. Certified garments are supplied with their user information and declaration of conformity.
- The current status of each garment is shown on its product page and on our Certification page.
Fabric test data
Unless we state otherwise, technical figures on our website and in our literature, including arc ratings, are fabric test data. They describe the fabric, not the finished garment, and must not be relied on as garment results. Garment-level results are published once garment certification is complete.
Choosing the right protection
- Selection must be based on your own risk assessment, carried out by a competent person. Employers remain responsible for their duties under the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992, as amended.
- For electrical work, the arc rating of the clothing system should meet or exceed the incident energy identified in your assessment. Open arc results (ELIM and ATPV, IEC 61482-1-1) and box test results (APC class, IEC 61482-1-2) measure different things and should be read separately.
- Arc-rated clothing protects against the thermal effects of an electric arc. It does not protect against electric shock or electrocution.
- Wear other PPE required by your assessment, such as arc-rated face and head protection, gloves and footwear.
- Only the HV Yellow and HV Orange colourways are designed for high-visibility use. Navy garments are not high-visibility garments. The high-visibility class of a garment, or of garments worn together, is confirmed in the certificate and user information.
Wearing your garments
- Choose the correct size. Garments that are too tight or too loose can reduce protection and comfort.
- Wear garments fully fastened, with sleeves down and hood, cuffs and closures secured as intended.
- Do not wear meltable synthetic clothing underneath. Wear flame-resistant or suitable non-melting base layers.
- Anti-static performance depends on the wearer being properly earthed, for example through suitable footwear, and on the garment covering any non-compliant clothing. Do not open, adjust or remove anti-static garments in a flammable or explosive atmosphere.
Inspection, care and storage
- Inspect garments before each use for holes, tears, worn or damaged reflective tape, broken fastenings and contamination.
- Withdraw a garment from use if it is damaged, heavily soiled or contaminated with flammable substances such as oil, grease or solvents, until it has been cleaned or repaired.
- Any garment that has been exposed to an arc flash or fire must be withdrawn from use and replaced.
- Wash and dry only in line with the care label. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. Where a maximum number of cleaning cycles is shown on the label, do not exceed it.
- Store garments clean, dry and away from direct sunlight, which can fade fluorescent high-visibility colours.
- Inherent flame resistance is part of the fibre and is not a finish that washes out, but wear, damage and contamination still reduce protection over time.
Repairs, alterations and branding
- Repairs must use flame-resistant thread and fabric of the same specification as the original.
- Do not alter, shorten, cut or modify garments.
- Embroidery, printing, badges and logos can affect flame resistance, arc performance and high-visibility compliance. Branding should only be applied using processes and materials approved by S.HENRY for the garment.
- Unapproved repairs, alterations or branding may invalidate the garment's compliance and our warranty.
Safety concerns and recalls
If you have a concern about the safety or performance of one of our garments, stop using it and contact us straight away at sales@shenryworkwear.com or on +44 7398 766874. If we issue a safety notice or recall, we will publish it on this website and contact affected customers directly.
